The theme is inspired by U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy’s work confronting the loneliness epidemic. NAMI Eastside’s luncheon seeks to use his Surgeon General’s Advisory as a conversation starter that will connect, educate, and inspire participants.
REDMOND, WA – NAMI Eastside. 27th September 2023 - A nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing mental health concerns, is hosting a pivotal luncheon on October 5th centered around the theme of coming together for mental health. The event aims to address the growing mental health and loneliness epidemic exacerbated by the pandemic.
The luncheon is built to be an educational experience for attendees. Funds raised will benefit the mental health of communities in East King County and beyond by supporting NAMI’s support groups and educational services that are offered free of charge.
The luncheon will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 5 at the Redmond Seattle Marriot. You can learn more, register, or donate on NAMI Eastside’s website. Media assets and more information can also be found in the press kit at NAMI-Eastside.org/press-kits
Inspired by the current times and the need for connection, the theme touches on the crucial importance of community and connection in healing. Much of the luncheon's discourse is influenced by U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy's Advisory on Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation. NAMI Eastside will be presenting Dr. Murthy with the NAMI Eastside Mental Health Champion Award at the conference.
Dr. Murthy explains in his advisory that even before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, approximately half of U.S. adults reported experiencing measurable levels of loneliness. Throughout his tenure, Dr. Murthy has spoken about the vital need to heal from the pandemic through a medicine hiding in plain sight: social connection. He’s traveled across the country, highlighting that people must be able build community and connections with one another in order to help us heal from the rampant isolation that existed even before the pandemic and to mend the social fabric of the nation. This sentiment is precisely the focal point of NAMI Eastside's luncheon this October.
NAMI Eastside’s support groups and classes are designed to combat loneliness with genuine connection, but many in the community are unaware of the free services we provide. This luncheon seeks to bridge that gap, educate our attendees, and most importantly, inspire them.
While we might not completely solve the loneliness crisis over lunch, the goal of this luncheon is to heal by bringing people together, and we can ignite a spark towards meaningful connections and community building.
Members of the community, partners, and supporters are all invited to join in this significant event. The gathering not only offers an opportunity for enlightenment but also for forging connections in the battle against loneliness.
