Definition Health and Horder Healthcare announce new partnership to digitally transform surgical pathways for over 6,500 patients
BRIGHTON, UK. November 18th, 2024 - Definition Health, a leading provider of personalised digital health solutions for surgical pathways, today announced a new partnership with Horder Healthcare, a healthcare charity renowned for its excellence in orthopaedic and musculoskeletal care.

This collaboration marks an important step forward in the adoption of digital solutions to improve patient care at The Horder Centre, East Sussex, a specialist hospital for orthopaedic surgery including hip and knee replacement.

Horder Healthcare will implement Definition Health’s flagship solution, LifeBox, to transform the pre-operative assessment process for over 6,500 patients annually. By digitising assessments, LifeBox enables patients to complete medical questionnaires from the comfort of their homes, reducing the need for in-person or telephone assessments, streamlining surgical workflows, and ensuring personalised care for every patient.

Supporting digital transformation in healthcare

The Horder Centre is a leader in orthopaedic surgery, performing more hip and knee replacements than any other independent hospital in the UK. Through this new partnership, The Horder Centre not only aims to improve pre-operative processes but also reinforce their commitment to innovation and operational excellence in orthopaedic care.

“We are delighted to partner with Horder Healthcare to enhance the surgical journey for patients,” said Sandeep Chauhan, CEO and Co-Founder of Definition Health.

“The LifeBox platform is designed to improve pre-operative efficiency, optimise patient care, and ultimately support hospitals in delivering better health outcomes. We believe that this collaboration aligns with Horder Healthcare’s dedication to delivering the highest standard of care.”

Streamlined patient care and operational efficiency

LifeBox empowers patients to take an active role in their healthcare journey, ensuring they are fully prepared for surgery while reducing unnecessary hospital visits. The intuitive platform allows patients to complete their pre-operative assessments via mobile phone, tablet, or computers, making it particularly beneficial for those facing mobility challenges, allowing them to engage with their care from home. The platform also offers educational resources to help patients better understand their upcoming procedures, providing them with the confidence and reassurance they need before surgery.

For clinical teams, LifeBox centralises all patient data in one digital location, enabling healthcare professionals to identify potential health concerns well in advance of surgery. This proactive approach helps reduce surgical delays and cancellations, ensuring smooth patient care. The system also supports patients who require specialist reviews or additional anaesthetist attention during their pre-assessment. By leveraging Definition Health’s digital solutions, Horder Healthcare expects to optimise workflow efficiency, providing faster, more comprehensive pre-operative assessments while maintaining their commitment to excellence in patient care.

Tara Thomas, Head of Clinical Services at The Horder Centre, commented: “At Horder Healthcare, we are embarking on our digital agenda with the application of LIFEBOX digital pre-assessment. This will allow our patients to be involved in their journey with us from the outset. With support from our collaboration with the Definition Health team, we will be able to provide a much more informative platform for patients to share valuable information in preparation for a pre-assessment and access documents, videos, and information leaflets about their upcoming surgery.

Reducing environmental impact

In addition to clinical and operational benefits, the introduction of LifeBox will support Horder Healthcare’s sustainability goals. The digital platform reduces the need for paper-based communications, such as health questionnaires and patient information packs, further minimising the hospital’s carbon footprint by reducing in-person visits and paper usage.

Tara Thomas highlighted the environmental benefits of this initiative. She said: “This shift will reduce the amount of paper documents our patients receive through the post, lowering our carbon footprint while also providing a more efficient way of managing patients through the early stages of their pathway. The interactive nature of the platform will allow us to manage much of the pathway in the comfort of the patient’s home.

“We anticipate a reduction in on-site appointments, which can present challenges for some of our patients due to our demographic and age group. Horder Healthcare is committed to digital transformation, with Lifebox marking the beginning of our journey toward a fully integrated Electronic Patient Record in the future.”
