Released on the Fourth Anniversary of Military Takeover, “Red Moons and Silent Truths” Exposes the Underreported Crisis
LONDON, UK. February 4th, 2025 - From teaching abroad to witnessing a nation’s upheaval, Lydia Goldman’s memoir, Red Moons and Silent Truths,” captures her experience of living through the initial weeks of Myanmar’s 2021 military coup. Released on the coup’s fourth anniversary, the book sheds light on a deeply underreported crisis.
Goldman arrived in Yangon in 2020, eager for a new beginning: teaching at an international school and volunteering with a local charity. Instead, she witnessed a nation plunge into chaos. When the military cut power and internet on February 1, 2021, Myanmar’s world changed forever.
Discussing themes of mental health, political unrest and cultural understanding, the book offers an unfiltered glimpse into the experiences of those living through one of the most tumultuous periods in the country's recent history.
“The situation in Myanmar remains critical,” says Goldman. “By releasing this book, I wanted to give a voice to unheard stories of Burmese civilians. Releasing the book on this significant date is my way of honouring the resilience of those who continue to strive for peace and democracy."
The timing couldn’t be more crucial. Recent UN data[1] reveals over 3.5 million people in Myanmar are internally displaced, with 18 million requiring humanitarian aid. Yet, despite ranking as the world’s second most severe conflict in December 2024—behind only Palestine and ahead of Syria and Ukraine—Myanmar’s crisis receives minimal global attention.[2]
“The world barely knows Myanmar as a country, and it’s so hard to see,” says Meredith Bunn, Founder of Skills for Humanity, a nonprofit community offering support and aid throughout Myanmar. “Things are really difficult right now. As foreigners, it’s hard to feel like it’s our place to speak out for the country, but it’s impossible to get the world to listen otherwise.”
