As Brits gear up for holidays abroad, new data shows many still have their eyes on sorting out their homes before takeoff.
LONDON, UK. April 15th, 2025 – Brits are spending money on home improvements alongside holidays this year, according to new data from Statista.
A new infographic titled “Miles Before Meals” reveals that travel is topping the list of discretionary spending for 2025 across the globe. Brits, along with those in the US, Germany, China and India, are most excited about spending their cash on holidays. However, home improvements came in fourth ahead of fashion, jewellery and even wellness.
It’s a reminder that while the idea of jetting off somewhere sunny is tempting, many people still want their homes feeling right before they go. Whether it’s fixing up draughty windows, sorting out a creaky door, or just making the place a bit more comfortable, the appetite for improving where we live is clearly still there.
Colin Greenslade, who runs UK-wide business Colin’s Sash Windows, says it reflects a pretty common mindset. “People want to enjoy their time away, sure — but they also want to come home to somewhere that’s warm and not costing a fortune to heat,” he said.
“We’ve had customers telling us they’re upgrading before their holidays, just so they’re not dreading the energy bills when they get back.”
With energy prices still a hot topic, and homes responsible for a big chunk of heat loss through old windows and doors, homeowners are still thinking about ways to cut down on waste and make their spaces more efficient.
Colin added: “While the beach might be calling, many are making sure their own front doors are in good shape before they go because no one wants to come back from a relaxing break only to be hit with a cold house and a warm gas bill.”
