LEEDS, UK. 6th January, 2024 - Lifeways has emerged victorious at the LaingBuisson Awards, winning the Excellence in Specialist Care and Excellence in Supported Living categories. Lifeways' Mental Health Division has developed a distinctive model that focuses solely on individuals with complex mental health needs. Their expertise includes supporting those with personality disorders and managing complex risks, such as individuals with a forensic background.
Winning the Specialist Care award for their exceptional ability to navigate the complexities of social care with expertise, the thoroughness of their assessment process is driven by their dedicated ‘Quality and Practice’ Team of Mental Health professionals, including registered MH nurses, social workers, and occupational therapists, all of whom have experience in both hospital and community settings. This team collaborates with individuals and their support networks to build a detailed understanding of each person. The judges described Lifeways approach as “exemplifying excellence.”
Lifeways' Mental Health Division challenges the dependence on in-patient care by working collaboratively, maintaining therapeutic optimism, and taking a positive approach to risk. Their goal is to help individuals leave hospital settings and reintegrate into the community in the least restrictive manner.
The impact of their approach to specialist support and close partnership working has earned them the trust of Responsible Clinicians and Forensic teams. It showcases the professionalism of the sector, demonstrating the feasibility of successfully supporting some of the most complex individuals in a community setting on their recovery journeys closer to home with autonomy and control over their lives, safely and in the least restrictive environment.
Named winners in Supported Living for innovative staff development, their effective use of Radar Healthcare's risk, quality and compliance system was mentioned as a contributing factor. By providing real-time data, which collected and analysed to deliver comprehensive behavioural statistics, the system enables users to provide evidence of full local and organisational governance of all services to regulators and other external stakeholders. These data-driven improvements have led to measurable success and have been crucial in understanding the function behind challenging behaviours, identifying triggers, and recognising early warning signs.
Radar Healthcare is permissions-based and fully customisable to Lifeways’ processes and working methods. It has enhanced and expanded the scope of the Risk Register, adding functions that allow recovery support workers to trigger notifications to the Risk Manager, the Quality and Practice operational link, and the relevant Area Manager. This enables them to monitor trends and events, such as the use of emergency services, and respond to incidents in collaboration with the Operations Team.
Helping individuals maintain their living environment is a key responsibility of the support team at Lifeways. In response to this, the team developed a reporting category within Radar Healthcare—Apartment Environment Challenge—which can be used by support workers to highlight any issues, triggering organisational alerts until the issue is resolved. This function has helped achieving an 80% reduction in issues like “hoarding” across their mental health services.
Rhian Bulmer, Chief Partnerships Officer at Radar Healthcare, said: “We are delighted that the data provided by Radar Healthcare has advanced Lifeways' organisational objective to work positively with individuals at significant risk and support some of the most vulnerable in our society. We are proud to support our partners in their work, providing care to those most in need.”
Gareth Roberts, Director of Quality at Lifeways, said: “Radar Healthcare has been a game-changer for Lifeways since we introduced it in 2022. It has provided us with incredible insights, across our UK-wide services, which have shaped our improvement journey.
It has made it possible to help us manage risks, achieve compliance across a range of metrics and improved our real-time oversight of everything from accidents and incidents, to safeguarding and medication – all in one place. It has given us a powerful way of reporting on our performance and compliance to regulators and stakeholders and was one of the key components of our award submission.
Not only this, but they are a great team to work with.”
